What was meant to be a fun getaway turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for 20-year-old Alejandro Cortez González, a talented artist from Saginaw, Michigan. On Sunday, April 20, 2025, while enjoying a weekend at the stunning Chac Mool Beach in Cancún, Alejandro bravely risked — and ultimately lost — his life to save a friend from powerful ocean currents.

Despite clear red flag warnings cautioning against swimming, Alejandro didn’t hesitate when his girlfriend struggled against the fierce Caribbean waves. He fought the surf to pull her to safety, but the relentless waters dragged him under. After more than 70 agonizing hours of searching, hope turned to sorrow when, on Wednesday, April 23, beachgoers near Portofino apartments discovered human remains. Authorities believe Alejandro was not only overwhelmed by the sea but may have also fallen victim to a shark attack, given the condition of the remains.
Alejandro’s mother, Renée González, shared the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post:
“We kept praying for a miracle. Though the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, God answered — we can finally bring our baby home.”
Due to passport issues, Alejandro’s parents had to continue the search from Michigan, desperately awaiting news.
As the González family grapples with this unimaginable loss, the Saginaw community has wrapped them in love and support. A GoFundMe campaign to help bring Alejandro home has already raised nearly $7,700 toward its $10,000 goal, and a charity spaghetti dinner is scheduled for Friday, April 25, at Miles Market.
Alejandro was more than a devoted son and brother — he was a rising star in the art world. Having just completed his junior year at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, his passions ranged from intricate sketches to vibrant textile arts. In 2023, he left his creative mark on Saginaw by painting a stunning mural as part of the Great Mural Project.
“He always put others before himself,” his mother said through tears. His godmother, Missy Pocock, called him a true hero:
“The Bible says there’s no greater love than to lay down one’s life for another — and that’s exactly what Alejandro did.”
In the midst of mourning, local officials are urging everyone to respect beach safety warnings, a message painfully underscored by Alejandro’s sacrifice. “This tragic loss shows why it’s crucial to obey safety flags and signs,” a Civil Protection spokesperson emphasized.
While the family awaits formal confirmation of the remains, their hearts are full of gratitude for the overwhelming compassion from friends, neighbors, and strangers alike.
“We’re surrounded by love,” Renée shared, drawing strength from the outpouring of support.
Plans are underway to bring Alejandro’s remains back to Michigan during the week of April 27 to May 3. His family is determined to honor his memory, not only through his incredible artwork but also by raising awareness about the importance of ocean safety — ensuring his heroic spirit continues to inspire others for years to come.
Alejandro González will be remembered as a true artist, a devoted son and brother, and above all, a selfless hero whose final act of love will never be forgotten.
